UNDAS 2024 Reminders: Honoring Traditions with Dearly Departed

Each year, Filipinos prepare for the UNDAS season to visit and honor their departed loved ones. This time of year, is marked by prayers, reflections, and the tradition of visiting, cleaning, and decorating tombs with candles and flowers. After the disruptions brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, people have gradually returned to these practices, restoring a long-held tradition.

In 2024, with life returning to normal, Dearly Departed is here to remind everyone that while we reconnect with our UNDAS traditions, it is important to remain mindful, safe, and respectful.

Here are some key reminders to ensure a meaningful and stress-free UNDAS this 2024:

1. Follow Local Guidelines

Each local government unit (LGU) provides specific guidelines for visiting cemeteries, memorial parks, and columbaria. While health protocols have eased, it’s still good practice to wear masks in crowded areas. Make sure to review your LGU's regulations regarding entry and other safety measures.

2. Plan Your Visit Ahead

Expect crowded roads and venues, especially as the long weekend coincides with UNDAS. Some roads may be closed or rerouted to manage the influx of visitors. Planning your route in advance and allowing extra travel time will help avoid delays and stress.

3. Prepare Your Essentials

Before heading out, ensure you have everything you need for the visit, including candles, flowers, and other offerings. Don’t forget necessities like food and water, IDs, and your mobile phone. Be cautious and avoid bringing prohibited items such as sharp objects, loudspeakers, or alcohol.

4. Secure Your Home Before Leaving

Before leaving for your UNDAS visit, take the necessary steps to secure your home. Check that all appliances are turned off, and doors and windows are locked. If possible, ask a neighbor or family member to watch over your home while you’re away.

5. Practice Respect and Cleanliness

While visiting, respect the rules and etiquette of the cemetery or columbarium. Always clean up after yourself by following the CLAYGO (Clean As You Go) principle. This helps protect the environment and ensures a peaceful atmosphere for all visitors.
